Complete 8-Hour STS Wheelchair Securement Certification Get fully compliant with MN Rule 8840.5910, Subpart 5. This mandatory training is required for all NEMT drivers who transport passengers seated in wheelchairs or assist with transfers.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTION FOR ALL DRIVERS: This module covers standard industry equipment (including lifts and large buses) for full certification. If you are currently operating a minivan, please view this as “General Industry Knowledge” required for future vehicle types.

Course Description

This course provides the mandatory hands-on instruction required for Special Transportation Service (STS) certification. In accordance with Minnesota Administrative Rules Part 8840.5910, Subpart 5, this classroom and practical session covers the techniques of transporting and assisting the elderly and passengers with physical disabilities.

Curriculum Requirements: Per MnDOT regulations, this workshop includes discussion, demonstration, and student practice in the following areas:

  • Wheelchair Handling (Item F): Methods of handling wheelchairs, including moving wheelchairs up and down steps, curbs, ramps, and lifts; folding and unfolding manual wheelchairs; and handling wheelchairs on uneven, wet, or icy surfaces.

  • Transfers (Item G): Communicating with, moving, lifting, and transferring passengers, including assisted and unassisted transfers, two-handed transfers, and standing transfers (if the service transfers passengers from a wheelchair to a seat).

  • Equipment Operation (Item I): Placing assistive devices, operating lifts, ramps, and wheelchair securement devices, and using them properly if the vehicle to be operated is equipped with them.

  • Ambulatory Assistance (Item J): Assistance to be offered to ambulatory passengers, including assistance for standing, sitting, and going up and down steps and curbs.

Prerequisite: Completion of this in-person workshop is required to satisfy the “Passenger Assistance” training requirement designated in Subpart 2, Item D.

3. Proof of Registration Upon successful registration, ensure you print or save your receipt/ticket. You must present this proof of payment and a valid ID at the event location to be admitted.
