This course covers the theoretical instruction required by MN Rule 8840.5910 Subpart 6. It is designed for drivers who transport passengers capable of walking or transferring without a wheelchair.

This course does NOT certify drivers in Wheelchair Securement or Lift Operations.

Requirement: To be fully compliant, the employer must verify the driver’s physical competency in assisting walking passengers (standing, sitting, steps) using the provided “Ambulatory Skills Verification Form” (PDF included in Lesson 1).

This module covers standard industry equipment (including lifts and large buses) for full certification. If you are currently operating a minivan, please view this as “General Industry Knowledge” required for future vehicle types.


Course Description

The Ambulatory Passenger Assistance & Sensitivity Techniques course equips STS and NEMT operators with the knowledge and practical skills required to assist walking passengers safely, respectfully, and professionally.

This training emphasizes understanding the diverse physical, cognitive, and sensory needs of the individuals served, ensuring that drivers and attendants are prepared to support each passenger’s mobility and comfort throughout the trip.

What You Will Learn:

  • Understanding Needs: How age-related changes, disabilities, medical conditions, and mobility limitations can affect communication, balance, endurance, and overall safety.

  • Physical Assistance: Proper body mechanics for assisting passengers to stand, sit, and negotiate steps, curbs, or uneven surfaces.

  • Sensitivity Training: Responding sensitively to emotional or behavioral challenges and communicating effectively with passengers who have vision, hearing, or cognitive impairments.

  • Safety Protocols: Managing passenger movement during boarding and alighting to prevent falls and injuries.

This training fulfills the Ambulatory Passenger Assistance Training requirement outlined in Minnesota Administrative Rules 8840.5910 Subpart 6.

Course Content

Ambulatory Passenger Assistance & Sensitivity Techniques
This course focuses on the vital role of vehicle operators in assisting passengers while maintaining their comfort, dignity, and safety throughout the transport process. It equips drivers with the knowledge and skills needed to properly use vehicle equipment, help passengers board and exit safely, and ensure that all occupants are securely positioned during travel. The training covers essential topics such as traveling to passenger destinations, locating appropriate boarding zones, and recognizing limitations in endurance, balance, and mobility. Participants will also learn about respectful communication, correct body mechanics, and how to support individuals with various physical or cognitive challenges—including speech, muscle, or limb control loss, emotional disorders, and sensory impairments. In addition, the course provides guidance on wheelchair securement, safe handling of mobility devices, and managing temperature control concerns to promote passenger comfort and safety. The Passenger Assistance A course adheres to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Rule 8840.5910, Subpart 5, ensuring full compliance with the state’s required standards for Special Transportation Service (STS) driver and attendant training.
