NEMT E Training

First Aid and Emergency Care Refresher

About Course

⚠️ COMPLIANCE WARNING: INSTRUCTIONAL THEORY ONLY

This course provides the 4-hour theoretical classroom instruction required for the First Aid Refresher under MN Rule 8840.5910 Subpart 9.A. It is designed to update STS and NEMT drivers on critical emergency response protocols.

This course does NOT certify a driver’s physical first aid competency.

Requirement: To be fully compliant with state law (Subpart 11), the employer MUST physically evaluate the driver’s ability to perform practical first aid skills (including airway management, bleeding control, and shock treatment) using the provided “First Aid Practical Skills Verification Form” (PDF included in Lesson 1).

This module covers standard industry equipment (including lifts and large buses) for full certification. If you are currently operating a minivan, please view this as “General Industry Knowledge” required for future vehicle types.

Course Description

The First Aid and Emergency Care Refresher course updates STS and NEMT operators on the critical cognitive knowledge required to manage medical emergencies effectively until professional help arrives.

This 4-hour review emphasizes rapid hazard recognition, appropriate emergency response protocols, and the theoretical application of life-saving techniques. It is designed to ensure drivers remain vigilant and prepared to handle unexpected medical crises across all types of transit vehicles and environments.

Course Content

First Aid and Emergency Care Refresher
The First Aid and Emergency Care Refresher course delivers essential update training for drivers and attendants currently providing Special Transportation Services in Minnesota. It helps each operator stay competent in core life-saving skills, recognizing medical emergencies, and responding quickly and safely while transporting passengers. The course reviews the primary duties of STS staff during medical events, including managing shock, controlling bleeding, and maintaining an open airway. Participants revisit how to spot sudden conditions such as strokes and seizures; respond to diabetic emergencies and environmental problems like frostbite or heat-related illness; recognize mental health crises; and correctly call for emergency medical services while on the road. It also emphasizes the professional behaviors needed to remain calm, focused, and effective in high-pressure situations. This training fulfills the continuing education requirement under Minnesota Administrative Rules 8840.5910 Subpart 9(A) and Subpart 4, which call for a four-hour refresher in first aid and emergency care every three years.
